Deputies: Man shot during drug deal at Orange Park apartments

ORANGE PARK, Fla. – A 20-year-old man was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound in what Clay County deputies said appeared to be a drug-related shooting.

The shooting happened about 1:40 a.m. at the Cedar Bend Apartment Complex on Bentwood Lane in Orange Park, according to the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Jose Maldonado was taken to the hospital and was expected to survive his injuries.

Deputies said Maldonado lives at the apartment. About 1:40 p.m. a friend of Maldonado arrived at the apartment to stay the night and shortly after he told Maldonado there was a man outside the apartment, deputies said.

Maldonado made contact with the unknown man and after a brief conversation, he closed the door as the man shot at least three times, striking Maldonado, deputies said.

Investigators obtained a search warrant and are processing the apartment for evidence.
