"He woke and smelled smoke and exited the residence with his animals. He wasn't sure of the cause. We have the state fire marshal in route to determine the cause," said JFRD District Chief Trevor Nelson.

The man was taken to UF Health for evaluation. Firefighters managed to contain the fire in just about 30 minutes.

The chief says there was a significant amount of damage to the home.

"I wouldn't say it's a total loss as of this point. But there is a significant amount of damage to this residence," Nelson said.
