WASHINGTON, D.C. – Florida Senator Bill Nelson's surgery for prostate cancer was a success Monday, according to his office.

Nelson announced last week he'd been diagnosed with prostate cancer and doctors would treat it surgically.

"Bill wants to thank all the people in Florida and elsewhere who sent prayers and well wishes," his wife Grace said following the operation.  "The doctors, nurses and staff caring for him are all just great."

Recovery is expected to take at least a week.
