Just after 3 p.m., witnesses reported debris from an accident strewn along the road just south of Baymeadows Road and a person lying in the road.

The man was taken to UF Health with life-threatening injuries, and the female driver who hit him was also taken to UF Health as a precaution. She is cooperating with police.

The man was walking alone, and the driver, who is described as being in her 60s or 70s, was alone in her car, police said.

Police said the woman was driving south on San Jose in the left lane when she hit the man, who was walking east across the road, about 30 yards from a crosswalk.

"It's very dangerous. Jacksonville is a very big city with a lot of big thoroughfares," Officers Jimmy Judge said. "We often see these pedestrians getting hit on Beach Boulevard and Philips Highway and San Jose, big corridors like that. We just appeal to everybody, 'Please, use your crosswalks. Use your lights.'" Lt. Jimmy Judge said.

Traffic homicide detectives are interviewing witnesses. No charges had been filed.

To lanes of southbound traffic were closed for about two hours.
