Thief steals $3,000 in ammunition from outdoor sports store

Robbery took place at Gander Mountain on Northside

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Police are on the lookout Monday for a man who is wanted for a robbery at a local firearms super-center.

According to police, 26-year-old Ronald Oehler is wanted for stealing more than $3,000 worth of ammunition from Gander Mountain in the River City Market Place on the Northside.

Records show that this isn't the first time Oehler has had a run-in with the law. He has pages worth of criminal history including petty-theft convictions and drug-related charges. A conviction in Monday's case would add grand theft to his record.

Police said Oehler went into the store with a small child who was wearing a book bag. The two then went into the ammunition section of the store and that's where police said Oehler loaded the child's book bag with $3,200 worth of ammo.

During the theft, a witness notified a store manager, who kept an eye on the man and child.

According to reports, Oehler kept one box of ammo in his hand and headed to the checkout. That's when he pulled out a debit card to pay for the item but that card was denied. Fortunately the clerk wrote down the man's name.

When the man went outside, police said the store manager noticed he was driving a 2014 black Dodge vehicle with the license plate number CLID62.

That's when store employees contacted police.

In a phone call with Gander Mountain's corporate offices, they said that out of 160 stores, the amount of thefts vary. In this particular case, they said that they were working closely with local law-enforcement officers and trust that they will solve the case.

Store policy states that employees are not allowed to stop a shoplifting suspect unless a police officer is with them, which is how Oehler managed to get away.

Anyone with information related to the case is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 866-845-TIPS.
