According to a report by Deputy Tyler Miller, a man attempted to pass a counterfeit $50 bill at the Dollar General Store in San Mateo on Aug. 13. Ten days later Deputy Darren Riley answered a call that someone had attempted to pass a counterfeit $20 bill at the Fast Track store in Interlachen.

In both cases the counterfeit money was turned over to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Both cases were assigned to Detective Marcus Phillips. Assisted by Detective Mark Stroger, Phillips was able to positively identify the suspect as Daniel Smith through surveillance video from the stores, deputies said.

Phillips filed warrant affidavits for both counts of uttering a false bank note.

Smith was caught Tuesday during a traffic stop in Hollister. He was transported to the Sheriff's Office, and following an interview with Phillips, he was booked into the Putnam County Jail without incident.
