Bicyclist killed in traffic accident identified

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 50-year-old man died Tuesday night after being hit by a car on Datil Pepper Road at US-1 in St. Johns County while riding a bicycle, officials said.

According to St. Johns County Fire Rescue Sgt. Dylan Bryan, the accident happened around 9:12 p.m..

Florida Highway Patrol has identified the man as Charles Frederick Barret and the driver of the car as 18-year-old Kalette Manka.

FHP says Manka was traveling US-1 SB and Barret was traveling eastbound on Datil Pepper Road.  Barret was crossing the intersection of Datil Pepper Road and US-1, when he traveled into the path of Manka's car and was hit.  Barret was pronounced dead at the scene. 

According to Bryan, Manka is cooperating with investigators.  Charges are pending.

As of 11 p.m., Datil Pepper Road at US-1 southbound was still closed as officials continued to investigate the accident.
