INTERLACHEN, Fla. – A Putnam County deputy on the hunt for a wanted man at a convenience store instead captured a suspected drug dealer, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said.

Richard Paul McIntire III, 27 of Interlachen, was arrested Tuesday afternoon and charged with possession of cocaine with intent to sell within 1,000 feet of a convenience store, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, possession of methamphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia, maintaining a drug vehicle, driving on a suspended license and refusal to sign a traffic citation.

Deputies said Lt. Scott Surrency pulled into an Interlachen convenience store Tuesday looking for a wanted man. As he was pulling into the store parking lot, McIntire began to pull out of the same parking lot, but upon spotting Surrency's patrol vehicle, McIntire immediately reversed into a parking space and jumped out of his truck.

Surrency made contact with McIntire, determined he was driving on a suspended license and arrested him.

When he searched McIntire, Surrency found a syringe in one of his pant pockets and several small plastic jewelry bags in another pocket that contained cocaine packaged for sale. McIntire also had a pill that tested positive for a controlled substance, for which he did not have a prescription, deputies said.

McIntire's truck was searched by deputies Aaron Holland and Kyle Simmons, and they found a scale for weighing cocaine and more small plastic bags with one containing methamphetamine, deputies said.

When Surrency issued McIntire a traffic citation for driving on a suspended driver's license, he refused to sign the citation, which is also a criminal offense, deputies said.

McIntire was booked into the Putnam County Jail without incident. His bond was set at $9,528.

The wanted man Surrency was originally looking for was not at the convenience store.
