28 US citizens missing on cargo ship in hurricane

33 total believed on board

Twenty-eight U.S. citizens are missing aboard a cargo ship that lost contact amid Hurricane Joaquin in the Bahamas, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

A total of 33 people are believed on board the ship named El Faro, with 28 of the crewmembers American. The other five are Polish nationals, according to a CBS News report.

The Coast Guard said the ship was taking on water and that it was listing at 15 degrees near Crooked Island, one of islands hardest hit by Joaquin, according to The Associated Press.

The ship was traveling from Jacksonville, Florida, to San Juan, Puerto Rico, and officials have not been able to re-establish communications with the vessel, the AP story said.
