2 crashes happen minutes apart in Columbia County

Pedestrian was hit 15 minutes after a deadly crash

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Fla – A 22-year-old woman is recovering after being hit by a car in Columbia County.

At around 1:25 a.m. Saturday, Rachel Newsome was near the scene of a deadly crash on County Road 246 near Morrell Drive. Troopers say 44-year-old Alan Christopher Holton was heading towards the scene of that deadly crash when he hit Newsome.

According to a report from the Florida Highway Patrol, she was walking along the edge of the roadway when the right side of Holton's vehicle hit her.

Emergency crews found Newsome in a ditch nearby.

She was taken to UF Health in Gainesville, and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The deadly accident happened about 15 minutes before troopers say Holton hit Newsome.

In the earlier case, FHP says 26-year-old Alan Holton Jr. was driving down C.R. 246 when his pickup truck traveled off the road. He overcorrected and ended up overturning the pickup.

He was thrown from the pickup truck when it overturned. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The deadly accident happened at 1:10 a.m. Saturday, and the pedestrian was hit at 1:25 a.m.
