Steve Spurrier retires as head coach of South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina Gamecocks head coach Steve Spurrier told his team Monday night that he was retiring effective immediately.

Sources said that a press conference is set to held making the formal announcement Monday or Tuesday and an interim coach would be named at that time.

Spurrier, 70, was in his 11th season as coach of the Gamecocks after returning to college football from a brief NFL career.

After returning Spurrier turned the Gamecocks into a winning program with three straight 11-win seasons from 2011 to 2013 but fell into a slump starting in 2014.
