Construction Begins on Final Phase of SR 9B

Anticipated to be completed in Summer 2018, the $79.8 million Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) project will include a new interchange with a new road, Peyton Parkway (Race Track Road Connector). Named after former Jacksonville mayor, John Peyton, the one-mile Peyton Parkway will provide Race Track Road with access to the new 2.3-mile expressway.

Peyton Parkway will also open up a 1,624-acre undeveloped track known as the Durbin Urban Services Area, to new development opportunities. Owned by Jacksonville-based Gate Petroleum Company's Durbin Creek National, LLC, Durbin will include 2.4 million square feet of shopping center retail space, 2.8 million square feet of office space, 350 hotel rooms and 999 multifamily housing units. Durbin is expected to be developed in four phases over the next 20 years. The development's first major anchor is expected to be Bass Pro Shops. The coveted Springfield, MO-based chain plans to open a 104,000-square foot Outdoor World on a 23-acre site donated by Gate.

In the meantime, construction continues to advance on SR 9B's Phase 2, between I-95 and US 1/Philips Highway. This $95 million segment is anticipated to be completed in mid 2016. Phase 1, from US 1/Philips Highway to I-295 East Beltway opened to traffic on September 20, 2013 at the cost of $75 million.

Eventually, SR 9B will become I-795.
