Coast Guard rescues 3 men after boat loses power

MAYPORT, Fla. – The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three young men from the jetties at Huguenot Park after their boat lost power late Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities said they received a 911 call about 6:30 p.m. saying a 20-foot pleasure boat with 18, 19 and 20-year-old men was taking on water. When rescuers arrived they found the boat had lost power and drifted into the jetties.

The Coast Guard took the men to Morningstar Marina in Atlantic Beach. There were no injuries.

“The water can be a very spontaneous place, anything can happen," said Lt. Stephen Lehmann. "Especially with boats and weather, there are so many different factors to take into consideration. That’s one of the reasons we are here and stay so gainfully employed because anything can happen out on the water.”

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission will investigate the accident.
