FHP: Man pushing pickup struck, killed on I-295

Victim was pushing a disabled vehicle in emergency lne when he was struck

JACKSONVILLE, Fla – A 55-year-old man pushing a disabled pickup truck in the emergency lane of Interstate 295 near Commonwealth Avenue Friday evening died when he was struck by a car, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

Troopers said William Edward Tarry was both pushing and steering a Ford Ranger in the southbound emergency lane about 6:40 p.m. when he was struck the right side of a Chevrolet Avalanche.

Terry died at the scene.

The driver of the SUV, Emerson Perry, 53, and a second person pushing the pickup truck were not injured. Troopers said Perry was cooperating with the investigation and it was not clear if he would face any charges.

All southbound lanes of I-295 at Commonwealth Avenue were closed for hours while troopers investigated.
