JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Tyehimba Yazid Fort, 34, was sentenced to 35 years in prison Friday afternoon for second-degree murder with a weapon and possession of less than thee grams of synthetic cannabinoid.

Fort pleaded guilty to the charges in August.

In September 2013, officers arrived at the Avesta Baymeadows Apartments and found 26-year-old Joseph Premo lying on the ground with multiple cuts and stab wounds. Premo was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries.

Investigation revealed that Fort and Premo were involved in a physical altercation. During the fight, Fort pulled out a knife and cut Premo multiple times. He then called a taxi and tried to leave the apartment complex, but officers arrested him after they saw him fleeing the scene in the taxi cab.
