VERO BEACH, Fla. – An Indian River County deputy was injured Friday in a shooting that followed a traffic stop in Vero Beach, according to officials.

Andrew Coffee, 53, was on a scooter when he was stopped by the deputy. Sheriff Deryl Loar said Coffee fumbled in his pocket for ID and produced a gun instead, causing the deputy to pull his weapon.

The deputy was shot once in the leg and Coffee was shot twice in the abdomen. Both were hospitalized.

The deputy is in stable condition, according to the sheriff. Coffiee's condition was not reported.

Coffee has an extensive criminal history, and served 21 years in prison for attempted murder, according to Loar.
