Reports of smoke in cockpit forced jet to land at JAX

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An American Airlines flight reported smoke in the cockpit and landed at Jacksonville International Airport on Thursday morning.

Flight 608 took off from Orlando at 10:26 a.m. and was heading to Charlotte. It landed at JAX shortly before 11:30 a.m. and the passengers were safely evacuated.

The flight was an AirBus 321 and 136 people were on board. Passengers said they spelled something burning right before the landing.

"“It’s never a good when you hear you’re landing where you’re not supposed to land," passenger Heidi McDonald said. “It was quiet; you could hear a pin drop, I think everybody was nervous.”

Fire crews were on the tarmac when the plane handed and boarded the plane with fire extinguishers. They were seen leaving the plane just before noon.

News4Jax is talking to passengers who were on board and were getting reticketed to board other flights to their final destination.

 

A statement from American said there was an electrical odor in the cabin.

“Our maintenance team is currently evaluating the aircraft. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience…”
