Palm Cost man, pregnant woman killed in accident

29-year-old Kevin Walsh, 22-year-old Jessica Darby backed over by dump truck

PALM COAST, Fla. – Two families are mourning the loss of loved ones after a dump truck backed over a man and pregnant woman Thursday night.

Those close to the victims said they just can't wrap their heads around what happened around 10:32 p.m. at a highway construction site  near Palm Coast on Forest Grove Drive and Palm Harbor Parkway.

The Florida Highway Patrol said 29-year-old Kevin Walsh got his pickup truck stuck while trying to drive in the construction zone. He asked his friend, Jessica Darby, 22, and her fiance to help him get out. Troopers said that's when a dump truck driver offered to help. The truck ended up backing over Walsh and Darby.

"He was a very, very good guy," Kevin's uncle, Kenneth Walsh, said. "We love them. We just don't understand it. I don't understand it."

Darby's parents were too upset to talk on camera, but said that Jessica was the oldest of their girls and was in the last trimester of her pregnancy.

Kevin's former bosses were also out at the scene consoling the families.

"I always thought that life is short, but this time it really hit me that it is short," said Jerry DiMura, Walsh's former employer. "I just saw him four days ago and he's gone."

The driver of the dump truck was transported to Florida Hospital with chest pains after the incident.

The FHP said the investigation continues and charges are pending.
