Police unsure if player was targeted or randomly attacked

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Jacksonville Jaguars practice squad defensive back Earl Wolff, 26, was kidnapped and released by armed gunmen while visiting Fayetteville, North Carolina, according to a report released Saturday.

According to the report by the Fayetteville Observer, police said they got a call about the kidnapping and robbery at about 3 a.m. on Feb. 23. It said Wolff was visiting friends at was walking to his SUV when he was approached by a group of men with guns who forced Wolff into his vehicle.

It wasn't until a man arrested in connection to the incident that the full story was put together. News4Jax spoke with the man who broke the story.

"I saw Earl Wolff's name from Raeford, 26-years-old, I said, 'Raeford is not that big of a town, that's got to be him,'" Thomas Pope, a writer with the Fayetteville Observer, said.

Wolff has asked through the Jaguars that his privacy be respected and does not want to speak about what happened.

Wolff was released in a neighborhood just south of Fayetteville. The report said it's unclear whether Wolff was targeted or if the crime was random.

"They (police) made one arrest and obviously they are looking for more since there are multiple people involved and so they put a plea out to Crime Stoppers to try and get something generated on that front," Pope said.

Bobby Deshawn Bailey has been arrested in connection to the incident. He's charged with robbery with a dangerous weapon, first-degree kidnapping, conspiracy, larceny, possession of a stolen motor vehicle and possession of marijuana. His bail was set at $156,000.
