Police arrest break-in suspect who jumped in river

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A man was arrested after breaking into a car and then jumping into the St. Sebastian River, according to the St. Augustine Police Department.

Investigators said Benjerman Bridges, 26, broke into a car near the St. Sebastian River around 11:45 p.m. Saturday. Police said the owner of the car saw Bridges and began yelling, causing the man to run away.

The car's owner returned to the top of the bridge to get the rest of his belongings when he saw Bridges jump in the water.

Deputies tried numerous times to get Bridges to swim to shore, but he refused.

St. Augustine Fire Department personnel arrived with a small dingy boat. An officer and two firefighters paddled out to meet Bridges to make sure he didn't drown.

The Sheriff's Office said Bridges took off his shorts and threw them at the boat and began swimming toward the boat and threatened to overturn it.

A deputy used pepper spray on Bridges and took him into custody.
