13-year-old charged in connection to 14-year-old girl's shooting

Victim's family says she is recovering in hospital

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – One day after a 14-year-old girl was shot in the chest behind a Northside apartment complex, a 13-year-old boy was charged with possession of a firearm by a minor, tampering with evidence and resisting arrest.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said the victim was shot in the chest about 1:20 p.m. Monday behind the Canopy Creek Apartments on Harts Road, near the intersection of Dunn Avenue and Interstate 95.

Ziya Skeith remains in critical condition at UF Health Jacksonville for about 24 hours. Police have not named the victim, but Ziya's family said they are with her and praying for her full recovery. They said her breathing tube was removed Tuesday and she was able to sit up.

Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sgt. Jay Farhat said investigators worked three separate crime scenes: one where the victim was found in the back of the apartment complex, one where a gun was recovered and one where they took a person of interest into custody.

According to the arrest report, the 13-year-old boy, who News4Jax is not naming, admitted bringing the gun to the apartment complex, running after the shooting and trying to hide the gun. He has not been charged in the shooting.

The Skeith family said Ziya knows the boy. The boy's grandfather said the shooting was an accident, but refused to talk about it.
