JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The Kernan Boulevard entrance to the University of North Florida was shut down Tuesday evening after a crash, authorities said.

The drivers of a BMW and a Chevrolet Malibu that collided near the intersection of South Kernan Boulevard and Alumni Drive about 5 p.m. were taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.

Police said the BMW was traveling south on Kernan Boulevard and witnesses told officers that it appeared the BMW driver was losing control of the car, which hit a median and then crashed into the Malibu, which was trying to make a turn from the northbound lanes of Kernan Boulevard.

Both cars flipped in the crash.

Southbound Kernan Boulevard was down to one open lane of traffic, but the northbound lanes were not affected.
