Man pleads guilty to 2014 attempted murder of officer

Gary Robert Schiwart, 48, faces up to life in prison


JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A man pleaded guilty Tuesday to attempted murder of an officer in January 2014.

According to the Office of the State Attorney, Gary Robert Schiwart and his mother got into a verbal dispute in January 2014, when he allegedly pushed his mother down, pointed a gun at her and threatened to kill her and himself. However, Schiwart's mother was able to get away and call police.

Officials said Schiwart barricaded himself inside the home and for several hours SWAT members and Jacksonville Sheriff's officers attempted to get him to come out and surrender.

During that time, officers said Schiwart fired at several officers before eventually surrendering.

Schiwart pleaded guilty to seven counts of attempted murder in the second degree of a law enforcement officer, two counts of attempted murder in the second degree and one count of aggravated assault.

Schiwart faces a minimum of 20 years and up to life in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for the week of May 16.
