Former collegiate swimmer drowns during lifeguard test

CAPE COD, Mass. – A former swimming star, who had recently graduated from college, drowned during a lifeguard fitness test.

Jack Jakubek set two school records while participating on the State University of New York-Courtland swim team. Jakubek was going to serve as a graduate-assistant coach at the school next season, while pursuing his Master’s degree.

Jakubek’s family said he had previously served as a lifeguard in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Saturday morning around 8:49 a.m. he went missing during a lifeguard swimming test. Jakubek was found 24 minutes later, and taken to a local hospital, but could not be revived.

State police officers are now investigating his death.
