Strong storms knock out power in Gainesville area

Fallen trees, downed wires also reported, GRU says


ALACHUA COUNTY, Fla. – Thousands of people in Gainesville were without power after a strong thunderstorm moved through Alachua County early Friday evening.

According to Gainesville Regional Utilities, nearly 7,000 customers were without power about 9:30 p.m.

GRU crews were called to clear several downed wires and fallen trees in the area. 

Crews were also called to County Road 1475 in northwest Waldo to fix a power line. A home in the area was also damaged by a tree that came out of the ground.
