Police: Escaped inmate turns herself in

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An inmate turned herself in Thursday night after escaping from a work-release program in the Atlantic Highlands neighborhood, near the Intracoastal Waterway, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Melissia Dawn Bennett, 39, is serving a sentence for multiple counts of uttering forged documents.

The Sheriff's Office said Bennett was given permission to cash a payroll check and was due back at the Community Transition Center about 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Less than 30 minutes later, police said they discovered she cut off her ankle bracelet monitor. Police said they found the discarded ankle monitor off Coral Drive.

Just before 10 p.m. Thursday, she turned herself in, the Sheriff's Office said.
