Powdery substance found in mail at newspaper harmless, police say

Police, FBI, firefighters investigate after white powdery substance found

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – A white powdery substance that fell out of an envelope Friday at the Historic City News turned out to be harmless,  the St. Augustine Police Department said.

When the substance fell from the envelope just before noon at the office on Riberia Street, employees evacuated the building and were told to stand by while emergency personnel were dispatched.

Officers arrived on scene and called the fire department and Hazmat teams to deploy to the area. The FBI was also called as a precaution.

The area was secured until Hazmat personnel determined the substance was not a threat.
