JSO: Son shoots father in foot

Incident closed Atlantic Boulevard several blocks for over an hour

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A domestic shooting on Tiber Avenue in the St. Nicholas neighborhood forced the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office to temporarily block off Atlantic Boulevard for several blocks Saturday.

Authorities received a domestic call at 9:54 a.m. on Tiber Avenue where officers said a son shot his father in the foot.

Officers blocked off Atlantic Boulevard from Palmer Terrace to Linden Avenue because they could not make contact with anyone inside the house, JSO said.

“He (the son) didn’t have a phone that we could reach him on," JSO Lt. Mike Beckman said. "So, we had to notify him with the P-A on the vehicle and get him to come to the point that we could talk to him without use of the car.”

The father was able to escape, avoiding a hostage situation, JSO said.

“His dad was able to get out, no problem whatsoever. So, we didn’t have a hostage situation or anything like that. He just wasn’t coming out," Beckman said.

The suspect surrendered to police around 11:20 a.m., JSO said.

JSO re-opened Atlantic Boulevard shortly after the son surrendered.

Several neighbors were evacuated for safety, JSO said.

The son was charged with aggravated battery and the father was taken to a local hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, JSO said.
