Deputies: 86-year-old man shoots niece, kills dog

Marion County deputies arrest Robert Lockhart

MARION COUNTY, Fla. – An elderly man shot his niece and killed her dog outside her central Florida home Monday morning, according to the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

Robert Lockhart, 86, left his home and went to his niece's house nearby shortly before 9 a.m., according to witnesses.

They said he took out a gun and started shooting 58-year-old Jennifer Lockhart and her dog.

While Jennifer Lockhart was laying in her driveway, Robert Lockhart went back to his home and then returned in an attempt to shoot her again, deputies said.

His weapon malfunctioned for unknown reasons, according to MCSO.

Robert Lockhart returned to his home and surrendered to deputies when they arrived on scene.

He was charged with attempted murder.

Deputies said the motive of the shooting is unknown.

Jennifer Lockhart was shot twice and is currently in stable condition at a hospital.
