80 guns collected at Flagler Kicks 4 Guns event

Officers exchange Target gift cards for guns

FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. – More than 80 firearms were turned in to law enforcement officers in Flagler County from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday at their 18th annual Kicks 4 Guns event.

Flagler County Sheriff's Office, and the Flagler Beach and Bunnell police departments collected the weapons from gun owners. In exchange, officers gave the gun owners $75 gift cards to Target.

Law enforcement officers made sure the guns were unloaded and safely secured in the owners’ vehicles.

As a safety precaution, officers retrieved the guns from vehicles for all gun owners and kept ammunition separate from firearms.

This was the first time the FCSO has participated in the Kicks 4 Guns event, which grants amnesty to people who want to get rid of guns without any questions asked.

Officers said all of the surrendered guns will be destroyed.

At least one gun was determined to be stolen. Officers said it will be returned to its owner.

There were other surprises during the event, like a Japanese war rifle being turned in. It was most likely seen as a war trophy, organizers said.

Other guns turned in included three short-barreled shotguns, which are strictly banned in the U.S.

“This was a great event to help us make Flagler County a safer place by taking unwanted guns off the streets,” Sheriff James Manfre said.

The event was sponsored by Real Radio 104.1, which arranged for food to be donated to law enforcement officers. In addition, the Flagler County Association of Realtors donated parking lot space for the event.

Residents also brought the officers food and bottled water during the event.
