Cleanup continues after EF-1 tornado tears through Yulee

National Weather Service says twister caused estimated $500K in damage

YULEE, Fla. – Cleanup continues one week after an EF-1 tornado with winds between 90-100 mph tore through several Nassau County neighborhoods, causing an estimated $500,000 million in damage, according to the National Weather Service.

No one was injured, but the community was still recovering Thursday and debris lined the streets.

One homeowner told News4Jax that the tornado caused about $50,000 worth of damage to her house.

Mark Caltagirone's home also has extensive damage after the tornado ripped off part of his roof, destroyed his fence and toppled down trees in his backyard.

"(I'm) definitely hoping the insurance takes care of it for us," Caltagirone said.

Caltagirone said he was coming back from a doctor's appointment with his wife and grandson on Aug. 4 when the severe storm hit. He said they ran inside the home and called 911.

"The sound? It was a freight train," Caltagirone said. "It was loud. There was just stuff flying everywhere."

Contractors and cleanup crews were a common sight Thursday along the twister's path of destruction. Landscaper Cliff Weller said he's been working long hours over the last week.

"I'm telling you, man. It is too much for work for me by myself," Weller said. "I feel bad for the homeowners. You know, it's good for me. But bad for them."

An NWS assessment team said the tornado was about 200 yards wide and was on the ground for 4.25 miles.

Nassau County work crews have been trying their hardest to get all the trees, branches, limbs and other debris out as quickly as possible. But they're asking for people's patience because there's just so much to move.

The county's public works director reminded people to only put trees and leaves in a different pile than trash, otherwise, county workers cannot pick it up.

The Nassau County Board of County Commissioners will meet Wednesday to find the most cost-efficient way to clean up everything.
