ST. JOHNS COUNTY, Fla. – A St. Johns County Sheriff's Office deputy on motorcycle patrol was injured Wednesday when he collided with an SUV on State Road 16 near St. Francis Road.
A blue Nissan Xterra was stopped in westbound traffic on State Road 16 due to a crash that happened earlier, which was blocking all lanes, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. A marked St. Johns County Sheriff's Office motorcycle driven by Deputy Sheriff Bickhart was traveling west in an eastbound lane of State Road 16, responding to the traffic crash.
Investigators said the deputy had his siren and lights turned on. The driver of the SUV attempted to make a u-turn to get out of the stopped traffic. Deputy Bickhart attempted to avoid the SUV, but was unsuccessful.
The deputy was thrown from his motorcycle onto the grassy shoulder of State Road 16. Investigators said he was taken to Flagler hospital in St. Augustine for treatment. His condition was described as serious.
The driver of the SUV was not hurt, and was cited for making an improper u-turn.
