JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – An 83-year-old man died at the hospital after being arrested on aggravated assault charges last week, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Roger Gionet was accused of attacking a 45-year-old neighbor he had a grudge against because of a road rage incident in May, police said. Gionet was cited in that incident.
The neighbor and his wife came home from dinner last Friday and found Gionet on their property. He had vandalized their car and boat, was wearing a ski mask and latex gloves, and had a hammer and a drill, police said.
The couple's yellow Jeep and boat had been spray painted red and the tires of the Jeep had been flattened.
Gionet came at the man, who got the hammer away from him and struck Gionet in the face with it. Gionet then tried to stab the man with the drill and the man hit him again with the hammer, punched him and kicked him.
The man told police he pulled the ski mask off and recognized the man as his neighbor, Gionet.
Gionet was charged with aggravated assault and criminal mischief, but died the next day in the hospital.
The couple filed for an injunction against the next day against Gionet before learning of his death.
