Patrol car struck after officer stops to help stranded driver

JSO says police officer was taken to hospital to be checked out

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A vehicle struck a police cruiser that had an officer inside it who had stopped to help a stranded driver on Interstate 95 Friday, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

The accident was reported about 5:30 p.m. on southbound I-95 just north of Golfair Boulevard.

The officer was taken to UF Health to get checked out, JSO Lt. Mike Powers said.

"He's going to be sore. They took him in for X-rays and, obviously, precautionary checks and everything. But it looks like he's going to be fine," Powers said.

No one else was injured in the crash, Power said. But all three vehicles -- the car that hit the cruiser, the patrol car and the stranded vehicle -- were damaged.

The Sheriff's Office's Traffic Homicide Unit continues to investigate.
