JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A 25-year-old man died Thursday night after he was hit by a vehicle on San Jose Boulevard near Beauclerc Road, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said.

Police said William Rodriguez, who lived on Philips Highway, was struck just after 9 p.m. while crossing in the middle of the intersection and pronounced dead at the scene.

"We've got a traffic light down there at Sunbeam, maybe 250 yards down, which would have been an optimal place to cross. And they were crossing in the middle of the block (wearing) dark clothing," JSO Sgt. Brian Shore said.

The driver of the car immediately stopped and was cooperating with investigators, Shore said. Police said the investigation of the accident was continuing.

The accident shut down all northbound lanes for several hours.

Several minutes earlier, a pedestrian was injured in a separate crash on Sunbeam Road, according to the Sheriff's Office.

"Unfortunately, we’re getting way too many of these lately with pedestrians are crossing in an unsafe location," Shore said.
