Man accused of robbing bank has mental issues, attorney says

Deputies say man found sitting in car outside after robbing Regions Bank

ST. JOHNS , Fla. – A man with mental health issues is accused of robbing the Regions Bank on State Road 13 in St. Johns on Monday afternoon.

Lee Ashley Alford, 51, has been charged with one count of robbery.

His attorney told a St. Johns County judge at Alford's first appearance Tuesday morning that Alford has mental health issues, and his wife said Alford hasn't been taking his medication.

Alford was brought in for questioning Monday after being found sitting in his car outside the bank and was then booked into the County Jail.

He will be released on $25,000 bond but has been ordered to follow medical recommendations and to stay away from the Regions Bank.

Deputies responded Monday to a report of a bank robbery at the Regions Bank at 12:15 p.m.

Employees said Alford entered the bank, approached a teller and demanded money without displaying a weapon, deputies said. An undisclosed amount of cash was turned over to Alford, who then walked out of the bank and got into his vehicle, a 2006 Toyota Highlander, deputies said.

Initial responding deputies found Alford sitting in his vehicle, and he was taken into custody without incident, deputies said.
