Pulse gunman's wife speaks out for 1st time since shooting

ORLANDO, Fla. – For the first time since her husband opened fire on June 12 at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Noor Salman is speaking about her experience with her husband, Omar Mateen.

The New York Times published the first interview with Salman on Tuesday detailing a relationship she said was abusive and was afraid to leave.

Salman told the Times she was afraid to leave Mateen, because she worried he would get custody of their son.

Mateen’s first wife also said he was abusive towards her.

On the afternoon of June 11, Mateen told his wife he would not be home for dinner, Salman told the Times.

Mateen never returned home to his wife, or their 3-year-old son.

The next day, Mateen killed 49 people and injured more than 50 during the worst mass shooting in recent U.S. history.

The last communication Salman said she had with her husband was a text message the morning of June 12, during the time of the shooting.

Salman denied any involvement in the attack to the New York Times, or any knowledge of what Mateen planned to do.

Salman told the Time the reason she is speaking out now is because she wants people to know she is a human and a mother.

The Times reports Salman and her family have moved several times since the massacre.

The published interview comes a day after the city of Orlando released a 911 call and negotiator recordings with Mateen during the 3-hour stand off.

During the almost 30 minutes of audio released, Mateen spoke to negotiators showing little emotion.
