Funeral to be held Saturday for mom shot, killed in car

Police say 3-year-old son was next to mom in back seat when dad shot her

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A funeral will be held Saturday for a mother who police say was shot by her ex-boyfriend in front of their 3-year-old son.

Bria Kelsey, 23, was shot and killed last Saturday while in a car with Kameron Holmes, police said.

Holmes has been charged in her murder.

News4Jax has learned that Kelsey’s parents will get custody of her son, who was in the car sitting beside Kelsey when she was killed, according to police.

Kelsey’s father, David Kelsey, said that he and his wife were granted temporary custody of the 3-year-old boy.

David Kelsey shared a statement with News4Jax on Friday:

Dearest Bria, Daddy loved you with all of his heart, and I want to apologize for not being able to protect you. This will forever haunt me. What could I have done differently to protect you? I tried to provide you with a home in a nice neighborhood that would possibly reduce your exposure to danger. You were an awesome daughter.”

Bria Kelsey’s funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Congregational Holiness Church in Green Cove Springs.
