Clermont police search for culprit who hurt athletes during Central Florida race

CLERMONT, Fla. – Several bicyclists were injured last month during a triathlon in Lake County after someone placed tacks on a road, causing the riders to crash, police said.

The injuries happened Oct. 22 at the Great Floridian Triathlon in the areas of Fosgate Road and near County Road 561A and Sugarloaf Mountain Road in Clermont, News4Jax sister station WKMG reported.

Police said someone put tacks on the roads, damaging several bike tires and causing some bicyclists to crash. One of the crash victims was airlifted to a hospital, but the extent of the bicyclists' injuries was not released by Clermont police.
