Capt. Brad Smith said law enforcement from both counties responded to the crash reported about 11:15 p.m., but the Florida Highway Patrol was the primary agency investigating the crash.

According to the FHP report, Christopher Driggers was driving a Ford F150 truck westbound on SR 100 and for unknown reasons crossed into oncoming traffic, hitting a Honda Civic head-on. The truck then hit the guardrail on the bridge, and a Kia headed eastbound behind the Civic hit the back of the Civic, causing both cars to spin into the westbound lane.

The driver of the Civic, 41-year-old Donna Crews of Keystone Heights, and her passenger, 10-year-old Kaelyn Crews, died at the scene.

Driggers was taken to UF Health Gainesville with serious injuries. The driver of the Kia, Viola Butts, was seriously injured but a hospital was not listed for her on the FHP report.

The bridge reopened just after 5:30 a.m.
