Multiple dead in shooting at Fort Lauderdale airport

'Everyone is running,' former White House press secretary says on Twitter

A shooting left multiple people dead Friday afternoon at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office.

The Fort Lauderdale mayor said a lone shooter was responsible, and deputies confirmed that the shooter is in custody.

Gov. Rick Scott is headed to Fort Lauderdale to be briefed by law enforcement, his office said.

As many as nine people were injured in the shooting, according to a report from WPLG.

Former White House press secretary Ari Fleischer, who was at the airport, posted on Twitter that shots had been fired.

"Everyone is running," Fleischer said.

All services at the airport have been temporarily suspended Travelers in Fort Lauderdale are asked to contact their air carrier about their flight information.

A Jacksonville Airport Authority spokeswoman said travelers need to check their flight status before heading to the airport, because it is a fluid situation.
