Putnam County fires corrections officer over contact with inmate

PALATKA, Fla. – Putnam County Corrections Officer Elizabeth Williams was fired after an Internal Affairs investigation found she violated multiple procedures and rules when she started an email conversation with an inmate charged with murder.

The IA report found Williams paid for Jerry Keene's email access, and brought him a book in jail. She emailed him last month, using the alias name of Dagny Taggart. In her emails, she told Keene she wasn’t looking for a romantic relationship, she just wanted someone to talk to about life, literature and history.

When confronted with the email trail, Williams told investigators she heard Keene was looking for a pen pal, and she realized it was bad judgment on her part to have begun fraternizing with him.

The IA investigation found she violated six standing orders.

Keene is awaiting trial in connection with the murder of Thomas Lombardo. Keene is also charged in the jail beating of another murder suspect, Austin Steybe.
