Sleepy father arrested after 1-year-old found alone outside, sheriff says

Brandon Overton faces child neglect charge

INTERLACHEN, Fla. – Sheriff’s officials arrested the father of a 1-year-old after the child was seen wandering unattended in a yard, investigators said Tuesday.

A neighbor who reported seeing the child on Monday said it was the second time within an hour and a half that she had found the boy outside by himself, according to the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office.

Brandon Leigh Overton, 23, was booked at the Putnam County Jail on a child neglect charge. His bond was set at $10,000, officials said.

Overton was arrested and charged with the same crime on Oct. 1 after he let another child -- this time, his 3-year-old son -- wander from the same home while he was inside sleeping, deputies said.

In the more recent incident, deputies were called to the home at 117 Fred St. in Interlachen about 10 a.m. Monday. They spoke with the neighbor who reported the child, and she told officials that she saw the boy alone earlier in the day, knocked on the door and was able to wake up Overton.

The second time she knocked, she couldn’t get Overton to come to the door, deputies said. So she called the Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies arrested Overton after speaking with him.
