JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – A woman inside an apartment unit escaped without injury early Thursday morning when a truck slammed into the building.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash was reported around 7:36 a.m. at the Dunes Apartment complex on McCormick Road in the Hidden Hills area.
The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office said a woman inside the apartment at the time was not injured, but her apartment and belongings were destroyed.
Neighbors in the surrounding units were also not harmed but heard the truck slam into the building.
"My wife and I heard a big boom this morning, and we turned on the TV, and there we were, and I said, 'Oh my God. We live here!'" said Richard Bursey. "I came around to see what happened and it looks like they tore out one end of the building."
The driver of the truck, Carlos Aguirre Andres, 24, has been charged with careless driving, according to FHP. The report said that Andres ran off McCormick Road for unknown reasons before hitting the center median and striking the apartment.
Andres, who was not injured, told News4Jax that he lost control of his truck after a vehicle in front of him suddenly stopped. He said he slammed into a tree and crossed several lanes before hitting the building.
City inspectors were contacted to determine if the building is safe. JEA crews also shut off power to the building during the investigation. Inspectors determined about 8:20 a.m., that the building was not in danger of collapsing and the pickup truck was removed from the structure and towed away.
The property manager said the complex is working with a contractor to get the damage repaired.
The woman whose unit was destroyed will stay with family, because the complex is full.
