PUTNAM COUNTY, Fla. – The Florida Highway Patrol shut down U.S. 17 in both directions Wednesday morning near the Putnam County line due to heavy smoke/fog in the area.
Officials issued the smoke/fog warning around 8 a.m. By 9 a.m., officials shut down U.S. 17.

Motorists were instructed to take alternate routes to avoid the closure.
Smoke from a fire at a nearby waste facility in Bostwick combined with the morning fog and forced officials to shut down the highway.
All northbound lanes and one southbound lane reopened around 10:15 a.m., officials said.
