FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Accused Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport gunman Esteban Santiago was indicted Thursday on multiple federal charges for the Jan. 6 shooting that left five people dead and many others injured, the Sun-Sentinel first reported.
Santiago, 26, is charged with five counts of causing death at an international airport, six counts of causing serious bodily injury at an international airport, five counts of causing death during a crime of violence and six counts of using a firearm during a crime of violence.

He faces life in prison or the death penalty if he is convicted.
Authorities said Santiago flew to Fort Lauderdale from Anchorage, Alaska, earlier this month to commit the mass shooting.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said Santiago told investigators that a government agency placed a chip in his head.
The FBI also confirmed that Santiago visited an FBI office last year in Anchorage, making similar claims and seeking help.
He voluntarily entered a psychiatric hospital, but was released after less than a week.
Authorities said his confiscated guns were returned to him a month before the shooting.
