GAINESVILLE, Fla. – A woman and a child she was carrying in her arms were injured about 4 p.m. Sunday when a man driving a U-Haul truck hit the woman in a Walmart parking lot, according to the Gainesville Police Department.

Evan Harrison Hawes, 42, has been charged with reckless driving resulting in  serious bodily injury.

Police said there was evidence Hawes had been huffing Dust-Off inside the U-Haul before he hit the woman, who suffered two fractures to her leg, including her femur. The child suffered a minor injury to her head, police said.

According to GPD, about an hour before the crash in the parking lot, Hawes had been reported for hitting property with the same U-Haul behind a Sunshine Inn on NW 42nd Avenue. Police said that crash damaged the building.

Hawes is also being charged with leaving the scene of an accident with property damage in connection with the Sunshine Inn crash, police said.

Hawes is being held on $27,000 bond.
