Boy, 13, caught with handgun at Glynn County school, police say

Boy facing charges for possession of weapon on school campus

BRUNSWICK, Ga. – A 13-year-old is facing charges after officials found a .380-caliber Taurus handgun in his possession at Needwood Middle School Thursday, the Glynn County Schools Police Department said.

The department was conducting a K-9 inspection of the district's middle schools in an effort to detect and deter weapons and narcotics when the boy was located outside a classroom with the gun.

Officers said the school was not placed on lockdown because police and administrators were present and took control of the boy, immediately removing him from the classroom.

Police said the gun was not loaded and was missing the magazine.

The boy was taken to Glynn County Juvenile Court. He is facing charges for possession of a weapon on a school campus.

"This is a good example of why it is important to conduct random unannounced visits like this to schools using K-9s," Chief Rod Ellis said. "We will continue to investigate this matter and determine how (the student) obtained the weapon and why he had it at school."
