Deputies: $20 debt leads to 'mass chaos' at Girl Scout cookie stand

Teenage brothers arrested in Palm Coast

PALM COAST, Fla. – A $20 debt led to a brawl at a Girl Scout cookie stand Saturday outside a Walmart in Palm Coast, Flagler County deputies said.

According to the incident report, Daniel Kennedy, 18, and his 16-year-old brother attacked the family of a Girl Scout who they said owed their sister $20.

Investigators said that when the family did not have the money to pay them back, Kennedy demanded to be paid in cookies.

A witness selling Girl Scout cookies told the teens that they could not give them cookies,"because the money belongs to the Girl Scouts," according to the report.

After being denied the cookies, the brothers knocked the cookies off the table and flipped it over, deputies said.

A witness tried to stop the teens from leaving the scene before law enforcement arrived and the suspects hit them. The victim's wife was also struck in the face by Kennedy, according to the report.

When deputies arrived, they said they found "mass chaos," according to the report.

"A table (was) flipped over, multiple boxes of Girl Scout cookies strewn all over the sidewalk and frantic patrons everywhere," a Flagler County deputy wrote in the report.

One man suffered a sprained neck and had to be taken to the hospital, according to the report.

The teens' mother, Erin Kennedy, told deputies that her sons confronted the Girl Scout leaders over the $20 because she is "suffering financially" and wanted to get the money to "make ends meet," according to the report.

Deputies noted that Kennedy's statement about the incident did not match any accounts from other witnesses.

"She states her sons were calm and apologizing while picking up the cookies and placing them back on the table," deputies wrote.

Deputies said Walmart video surveillance showed no evidence of that.

Daniel Kennedy is charged with three counts of simple battery and one count of disorderly conduct. The 16-year-old is charged with one count of battery and disorderly conduct.
