Handgun found in roommate's car after body found, deputies say

Roommate killed in crash around corner night before body found in home

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. – The roommate of a man found dead last week in a St. Johns County home had a handgun in his car with one round of ammo missing, deputies said Wednesday.

Steven Canard, 55, was killed Monday when a speeding motorcycle T-boned his car on State Road 207, around the corner from the Los Robles Avenue home where his roommate's body was found hours later.

James Henry Weaver, 56, was found dead from a gunshot wound to the chest, and his death was ruled a homicide, according to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office.

Investigators said Weaver moved into the home a short time ago with Canard.

Deputies were called to the home Tuesday morning to conduct a welfare check after a friend of Weaver said she was unable to reach him and he wouldn't come to the door.

After connecting the home where Weaver was found to Canard, deputies said they were checking Canard's car for possible evidence.

Detectives and Florida Highway Patrol troopers who searched the car found a handgun with a missing round of ammo.

Deputies said they are still investigating Weaver's homicide, but they are not looking for any suspects.

Canard had been charged with grand theft for passing bad checks in 2016. The charges were changed to schemes to defraud but the case was dismissed last Wednesday because of his death.
